SUFFIELD, Conn. (AP) - A Connecticut man charged with killing his wife and placed on suicide watch in prison has died after officials say he was found with an object around his neck in his prison hospital room. His attorney is calling for an outside investigation of his death.
A Department of Correction spokeswoman says 45-year-old Michael Torbicki Jr. died from an apparent suicide Monday morning at the MacDougall-Walker Correctional Institution in Suffield.
Karen Martucci says staff on a routine tour found Torbicki with a ligature around his neck. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.
Torbicki was charged with murder in the Sept. 21 fatal shooting of his wife, Patricia, at their Newington home.
Torbicki’s lawyer, Jon Schoenhorn, says Torbicki was supposed to be on a court-ordered suicide watch in prison.
