LOS ANGELES (AP) - A jury has recommended death for a Southern California man convicted of torturing to death his girlfriend’s 8-year-old son.

Isauro Aguirre of Palmdale showed no reaction Wednesday as jurors made their recommendation in a Los Angeles courtroom. A judge will sentence him in March.

Aguirre was convicted of first-degree murder last month.

Prosecutors say he starved, bound and brutalized Gabriel Fernandez for months and then tortured him to death in 2013. The boy’s head-to-toe injuries included a fractured skull.

Aguirre’s attorney, Michael Sklar, argued that his client attacked the boy while in a rage and hadn’t intended to kill him.

The boy’s mother still faces trial for murder. Four former social workers have been criminally charged for allegedly ignoring the boy’s plight and trying to cover up their negligence.
