The District’s attorney general announced Wednesday that he has filed a lawsuit accusing the owners and managers of the 3003 Van Ness Apartments in Northwest of misleading consumers about the rates for rent-controlled apartments.

D.C. Attorney General Karl Racine said the lawsuit alleges that Smith Properties Holdings Van Ness and Equity Residential Management use “rent concessions” to trick customers into signing leases without providing all the necessary information about the leases.

The customers end up paying rents that are much higher than those for rent-controlled apartments in the District.

The lawsuit was filed in D.C. Superior Court.
