CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (AP) - A Long Island man who was intoxicated when he caused a fatal wrong-way crash in 2015 has been sentenced to up to 15 years in prison.

Newsday reports 56-year-old Christopher O’Brien, of Sound Beach, was sentenced Wednesday in a Suffolk County court to five to 15 years in prison. O’Brien had previously been convicted of manslaughter in the crash.

In 2015, authorities say O’Brien was driving the wrong way on Sunrise Highway on the morning of Dec. 23, 2015, ultimately crashing into and killing 57-year-old Thomas D’Eletto, of Aquebogue (AK’-wuh-bahg), who was on his way to work.

The defense and prosecution both had acknowledged O’Brien was intoxicated while driving.

During his sentencing state Supreme Court Justice Fernando Camacho called O’Brien “selfish, weak and irresponsible.”
