EAST PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (AP) - A group of Long Island police officers will don a different uniform this weekend: as Santas and his elves, serving underprivileged families.
On Saturday afternoon, police in Suffolk County plan to deliver Christmas trees and gifts to children in nine families.
Officers in the county’s Fifth Precinct, based in Patchogue, are visiting the Hall Enterprises nursery to invite the families to pick their own tree. Each evergreen will come with ornaments, stands, lighting and tree skirts.
Once a family chooses a tree, Charlie Hall, the owner of Hall Enterprises, will chop it down. The officers will tie the tree to the families’ vehicles to ensure safety.
The families were chosen by a Patchogue Village board member and include a disabled veteran.
