BANGOR, Maine (AP) - Bangor officials have voted to restrict where Maine’s Republican governor builds a new psychiatric residence in the city.
The Bangor Daily News reports the Bangor City Council voted 8-1 Monday that Gov. Paul LePage can only build the facility on the Dorothea Dix Psychiatric Center campus. Mayor Ben Sprague says the city can’t stop construction on the 21-bed residence, but they can have a say in where it’s located.
The residence would house patients accused of crimes. LePage previously proposed building it across the street from the Dorothea Dix. The governor also threatened a lawsuit against Bangor after the city voted to postpone the project for six months.
City Manager Cathy Conlow said city and state officials have since been communicating “amicably.”
