PHOENIX (AP) - Authorities say an off-duty deputy with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office who was working security at a Phoenix supermarket shot and wounded a woman suspected of trying to cash a stolen check.

Police say the woman was one of two people who were trying to cash the check Friday afternoon.

The uniformed security guard approached after being alerted by a cashier and the woman started to run. He caught her by the back of the shirt, and police say that’s when she pulled a gun from her waistband and fired it over her shoulder.

The guard returned fire, hitting the woman. The other suspect got away.

Police did not immediately release the name of the suspect or the guard. They did say he has been with the sheriff’s office for three years.
