BALTIMORE (AP) - The city of Baltimore has recorded a spike in the number of sleep-related infant deaths, prompting city health officials to urge parents to practice safe sleep practices.
The Baltimore Sun reports that 12 babies have died in their sleep so far this year, with health officials unable to identify a particular reason for the sudden increase. The city had been making inroads on decreasing the second leading cause of infant mortality in Baltimore, recording seven sleep-related deaths last year - the lowest on record.
City Health Commissioner Leana Wen called upon the community to address the issue on Monday. The health department encourages parents to follow the “A-B-C-D” method: alone, back, crib, don’t smoke.
