The maker of Guinness beers has announced a new U.S. brewery in the works to open just outside of Baltimore later this year.
British alcoholic beverage giant Diageo hopes to open the Relay, Maryland, facility this fall and is pouring some $50 million into the project, NBC’s Washington affiliate reported Tuesday.
Guinness will house its new beers created for the U.S. market at the Maryland brewery, while continuing to manufacture its iconic Guinness Stout brands at St. James’s Gate in Dublin, NBC reported.
In addition to brewing and bottling beer, the facility will provide tours and a tasting room, as well as sell Guinness-branded merchandise.
The facility, located in southwest Baltimore County on the site of the now-shuttered historic Calvert distillery plant in Relay, should create 70 permanent jobs, Baltimore’s WBAL-TV reported Wednesday.
About 40 of those would be in “brewing, warehousing and an agile packaging operation, which may include canning, bottling and kegging,” according to WBAL, while “The Guinness visitor experience could create about 30 additional jobs.”
Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan called the decision “great news for job creation, manufacturing, and tourism in our state,” while Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz hailed it as “a popular tourist destination [that] will be a perfect complement to our local craft breweries,” NBC reported.
