BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - State biologists say oysters are in bad shape in Calcasieu Lake, so the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is closing all public areas to harvesting after sunset Monday.

A department news release Thursday said the oyster population there has been in decline for several years, and continued commercial harvest might endanger what’s left.

The season opened Nov. 1, with each boat limited to seven sacks of oysters a day.

The west cove in Cameron Parish was closed Jan. 24.
