FALL RIVER, Mass. (AP) - Authorities are investigating after a woman died in an early morning house fire in Fall River.

The Fall River Herald News reports (https://bit.ly/2lxxyVd) firefighters responded to a report of a fire in an attic apartment and a woman trapped inside at around 4:30 a.m. Friday.

Fire officials found a woman in her 50’s unresponsive on the third floor. The victim was rushed to the hospital suffering from smoke inhalation but later died.

District Chief Jeff Bacon told the Herald News that bitter cold and heavy snows caused problems for firefighters trying to get ladders up to the fire area.

The Massachusetts Department of Fire Services said state and local police, as well as the Bristol County District Attorney’s office are investigating. The victim’s name hasn’t yet been released.
