ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. (AP) - State corrections representatives say no one was hurt after inmates destroyed furniture, covered windows and fashioned weapons they improvised from items in their unit.

The Vermont Department of Corrections says a small number of inmates at Northeast Regional Correctional Facility caused the Friday night disturbance as they demanded cigarettes and asked for the telephones to be turned on.

The disturbance happened around 7:30 p.m. in a general population unit that houses 32 inmates.

Two hours later, the Department of Corrections’ tactical team entered the unit and resumed control. The department expects Vermont State Police to conduct a criminal investigation into the inmates involved in the disturbance.

No staff or inmates reported injuries, and law enforcement says the public was not at risk at any time from the incident.
