NORTH SMITHFIELD, R.I. (AP) - Police say a pedestrian was hit and killed by a tractor-trailer while walking on state Route 146 in North Smithfield.

Capt. Tim Lafferty says the man was struck just after noon on Saturday near the Greenville Road on-ramp. Paramedics declared him dead at the scene.

Police say the man was in his 40s. His identity is being withheld until his family can be notified.

An investigation remains ongoing.
