SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) - Santa Barbara County authorities say a man possibly under the influence of drugs was fatally shot when he advanced toward sheriff’s deputies with a knife in hand.

A Sheriff’s Office statement says 26-year-old Bryan Carreno was shot late Sunday in an unincorporated area of Santa Barbara.

Authorities were initially called at 6:30 p.m. by a family member who reported Carreno was hallucinating, acting out and possibly under the influence.

Other residents then reported seeing Carreno in their backyards.

Eventually, a resident reported the man rifled through a kitchen drawer and might still be in their home.

The department statement says deputies went inside, spotted Carreno armed with a kitchen knife and retreated. He then ignored commands to drop the knife, came outside toward the deputies and was shot multiple times.
