PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A former Portsmouth man who taught at Naval War College in Newport has been sentenced to five years in federal prison for distributing child pornography.

Federal prosecutors say 48-year-old Adam Cobb was also sentenced on Monday to complete a decade of supervised release and pay a $25,000 fine.

Cobb was arrested in April 2015. He pleaded guilty a year ago to distribution of child pornography.

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children alerted state police in January 2015 that someone uploaded child pornography to Tumblr.com.

Investigators later seized digital media, computers and cellphones from Cobb.

The Providence Journal reports Cobb had been director of the Mahan Advanced Research Project at Naval War College. He had been a warfare expert and professor there since 2014.
