MANTECA, Calif. (AP) - Police say they shot and critically injured a man armed with a knife in an incident that completely shut down traffic on a major highway in Northern California.

Manteca Police Sgt. Mike Aguilar said a 57-year-old man was walking in a lane of oncoming traffic on State Route 99 Wednesday morning, shouting suicidal comments.

Aguilar says officers first tried talking with the armed man.

He says a California Highway Patrol officer fired a stun gun, and a Manteca police officer fired a duty weapon. Witnesses described hearing three shots fired.

Aguilar says traffic in both directions was stopped for up to 30 minutes. He says the man was taken to a hospital and immediately underwent surgery. The investigation is ongoing.
