CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police say a suspect has been arrested in the shooting death of a newspaper carrier whose body was found near the uptown area.

A statement issued by police on Thursday said 22-year-old Roger Best is charged with murder, attempted armed robbery and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Police said officers responding to a call around 2:20 a.m. Wednesday found 65-year-old Walter Scott Jr. of Lancaster County, South Carolina, lying in the street with a gunshot wound. Emergency personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.

The statement said as officers arrived at the scene, another man flagged them down and said he had been shot. That man was Best.

Authorities said once Best is released from the hospital, he will be transferred to the Mecklenburg County jail.
