OREM, Utah (AP) - Matt Smith scored 18 points, Damiyne Durham scored 16, and Jaylin Airington added 14 points and Cal State Bakersfield beat Utah Valley 80-71 on Thursday night.

Cal State Bakersfield (18-7, 9-1 Western Athletic) took the lead for good 12 seconds into the game on Smith’s layup and led 11-3 with 14:13 to play before halftime. Jared Stutzman’s 3 brought the Wolverines to within 19-16 almost five minutes later before Cal State Bakersfield went on a 19-10 run to close the half.

Stutzman’s 3 with 7:33 left brought Utah Valley within 58-54 with 7:33 to play but it couldn’t get closer.

Jordan Poydras led Utah Valley (11-14, 3-7) with 15 points, Conner Toolson had 14 shooting 5 for 6, and Brandon Randolph scored 10.

Cal State Bakersfield shot 30 for 54 (56 percent) from the floor but missed 13 free throws (16 for 29) on 55 percent shooting from the foul line.
