BELLEVILLE, N.J. (AP) - Police in New Jersey are investigating after a man was found critically injured with a gunshot wound to his head after the car he was in crashed in the township of Belleville.

Authorities say the gunshot victim was among five people injured when a Pontiac collided with a utility pole near Branch Brook Park around 2 a.m. Thursday.

A joint statement issued by Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray and Belleville Police Chief Mark Minichini says the man who was shot was undergoing surgery.

The release states that the preliminary investigation indicates that the Pontiac left Newark and was followed into Belleville by another vehicle prior to the crash and shooting.

Franklin Avenue was closed for at least four hours while police examined the crash scene and collected evidence.
