NEW YORK (AP) - Authorities say officers responding to a call about a robbery at a deli shot and killed the suspect after he pointed what looked like a firearm at them.

The New York Police Department says it happened around 12:40 a.m. Sunday on Starr Street in Brooklyn. The officers saw the man, identified as 18-year-old Sergio Reyes of Brooklyn, walking on the street and issued verbal commands.

Authorities say Reyes pointed a black firearm toward the officers, who fired at him. He was hit multiple times and pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police say what appears to be an imitation pistol was recovered at the scene.

The pistol was later described as a pellet gun. Police say video surveillance shows Reyes pointing the gun at a bodega clerk during a robbery.
