CULLMAN, Ala. (AP) - Authorities say an Alabama man with a history of mental problems is dead following a police standoff that ended with him setting fire to the house where he was holed up.

The Cullman Times (https://bit.ly/2jAkWQI ) quotes police as saying 52-year-old Frank Kane was killed inside the house where he lived with his elderly mother in Cullman.

Police say a relative visited the home Wednesday afternoon to check on the two, but Kane started spreading gasoline. His mother was able to get out.

The relatives called authorities, who the man allegedly threatened with weapons. The fire began after about four hours and engulfed the house in seconds.

Police Chief Kenny Culpepper says officers knew Kane since his continuing mental problems and threatening behavior brought him into contact with officers repeatedly.
