CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (AP) - A jury has found that a man driving over 90 mph caused a fiery crash on Long Island that killed a father and his two children.

Oniel Sharpe Jr. was convicted Thursday of aggravated vehicular homicide, manslaughter and other charges.

Sharpe faces up to 36 years in prison when he is sentenced next month.

Prosecutors estimated Sharpe was intoxicated when he rear-ended a vehicle in July 2015 on the Southern State Parkway. Sharpe’s attorney challenged the prosecutors’ charge of Sharpe’s intoxication because it used a technique known as retrograde extrapolation.

A spokesman for the district attorney says proving intoxication was required to get the aggravated vehicular homicide conviction.

Prosecutors said Sharpe was racing another vehicle when he crashed.

It was not immediately clear whether the attorney would appeal the conviction.
