NEW YORK (AP) - The city has agreed to settle a lawsuit over an NYPD program that patrols inside private buildings.
Police patrol thousands of private residential buildings in New York under the program known as Clean Halls. Landlords can opt in. The New York Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit on behalf of Bronx residents who said they were being wrongly stopped in their own buildings.
The case is related to the ruling by a federal judge that the police department had violated the civil rights of black and Hispanic New Yorkers with its stop and frisk policy.
The city will pay $230,000 to the lead plaintiffs. The settlement announced Thursday requires re-training officers, and prohibits police from taking enforcement action against people merely because they’re in or around enrolled buildings anywhere in the city.
