DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Des Moines police have taken a woman into custody, saying she attacked an 89-year-old church deacon with a knife.

Police say the assault happened at St. Augustin Catholic Church around 11 a.m. Thursday, when a woman in the sanctuary attacked the deacon with a large knife, leaving cuts on his face and hands. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Police quickly located the 31-year-old woman outside the church and arrested her on suspicion of willful injury.

The church said the woman appeared to be deranged when she attacked the deacon.
