SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The Salt Lake County sheriff says President Donald Trump’s recent executive order on immigration will have no impact on policies at the county jail.

Sheriff Jim Winder said Wednesday that his office has always upheld immigration detainers placed on people booked into jail, meaning the new executive order changes nothing for the Salt Lake County Jail.

Winder says law enforcement officers will not stop citizens on the streets and inquire about their immigration status. He says immigration issues only apply to people in the jail.

He says many non-American born residents have called his office concerned that he will be checking the immigration status of people on the street. He says he wants to assuage those fears.
