CENTRE, Ala. (AP) - A lawsuit claims a faulty identification by authorities led to the mistaken cremation of a northeast Alabama woman.
Sarah Edwards filed suit against Cherokee County Coroner Jeremy Deaton, his assistant and the county claiming the body of 68-year-old Clara Edwards was mistakenly identified following a triple slaying in November 2015.
The Gadsden Times (https://bit.ly/2k3APO9 ) reports that Clara Edwards was among three people killed in a kidnapping and murder. Her 71-year-old sister Sylvia Sue Duffe also was slain.
The lawsuit claims the women’s bodies were mixed up, resulting in Edwards’ remains being cremated by mistake rather than buried beside her husband.
The suit says the error caused her daughter emotional distress.
The coroner declined comment, and court records show other defendants have yet to respond to the claim.
