MINOT, N.D. (AP) - A former Minot neurosurgeon has agreed to plead guilty to federal sex abuse charges, according to court documents.

The document filed in U.S. District Court say Dr. Marc Edward Eichler is expected to plead guilty to one count of production of child pornography, the Minot Daily News (https://bit.ly/2lOAsJc ) reported. He faces two to 10 years in prison and will be required to register as a sex offender.

Eichler is accused of exchanging sexually explicit texts and photos in 2015 with two girls, ages 12 and 13. He is also accused of allegedly providing one of the girls with gifts, including alcohol, tobacco, a smartphone and also allegedly paid for hotel rooms for the girl and her friends as incentive for her not to talk about the alleged sex abuse.

He was indicted last year on two counts of production of materials depicting the sexual exploitation of minors; two counts of attempted production of materials depicting the sexual exploitation of minors; one count of receipt of materials involving the sexual exploitation of minors; one count of attempted receipt of materials involving the sexual exploitation of minors and one count of transfer of obscene materials to minors

Other counts in the indictment would be dismissed under the plea deal.

The prosecutor notes the sentence is subject to change if a pattern of abuse and use of a computer to commit the offense occurs.

A sentencing date for Eichler hasn’t been set.

The North Dakota Board of Medicine has suspended Eichler’s license to practice indefinitely, citing unprofessional conduct.
