FILLMORE, Calif. (AP) - Officials say a fire destroyed a church in Ventura County and displaced the pastor and his family, who live nearby on the property.

The Ventura County Star (https://bit.ly/2leCCh0) reports the family of six escaped unharmed in the Sunday blaze that destroyed the Christian Evangelical Church in Fillmore.

The fire first consumed the steeple, which collapsed into the modest, one story-building that caters to Spanish-speaking congregants.

Fillmore Fire Chief Keith Gurrola says firefighters extinguished the fire in about an hour. A cause has not been determined.

Pastor Cesar Perez declined to comment except to say that he and his wife and their four children were safe. He said he was trying to figure out what to do next for church members.
