FAIRFIELD, Conn. (AP) - State police say a 43-year-old Connecticut man was killed when his SUV veered off Interstate 95 in Fairfield and struck a tree.

James Minidrum, of Stratford, was driving northbound on I-95 when his vehicle went off the right shoulder just south of Exit 23 around 2 a.m. Monday.

State police say Minidrum’s Ford Explorer went through a wire rope guardrail and down an embankment before striking a tree.

Minidrum had to be extricated from his vehicle by first responders. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The right lane of I-95 north remained closed for about three hours before reopening.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
