DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A full-scale grocery store has opened in downtown Des Moines for the first time in decades.

People were lined up early Tuesday to mark the opening of the Hy-Vee store on Court Avenue, just east of the Polk County Courthouse.

The $10 million store is different from most of West Des Moines-based Hy-Vee’s stores. The 36,000-square-foot store melds a traditional store with a larger selection of prepared foods.

City officials have long sought a supermarket for the downtown area, and their success is in large part due to tremendous population growth that compliments a workforce of 80,000. An estimated 9,000 people live downtown, and that figure is expected to grow significantly in the coming years.

The store sits on a former parking lot and is beneath three floors of housing.
