MERRILL, Wis. (AP) - Sheriff’s officials in northern Wisconsin say a deputy responding to a report of a car in the ditch shot and killed the driver who fired at the officer.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office says 40-year-old Shawn Igers, of Wausau, was fatally shot Monday evening along Highway FF in the Town of Corning, which is southwest of Merrill.

A statement says a deputy with more than six years of law enforcement experience returned Igers’ gunfire shortly after responding to the call. The deputy is on administrative leave while an investigation is done.

The Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation has been asked to lead the investigation.
