MARLBOROUGH, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a 21-year-old woman is in critical condition after she was inadvertently shot in the face by a Hudson Valley man.

State police and local law enforcement in the Ulster County town of Marlborough responded Sunday to a 911 call reporting someone had suffered a gunshot wound inside a home.

When police arrived they found a woman suffering from a single gunshot wound to her face. She was taken to Westchester Medical Center where she’s listed in critical condition. Her name hasn’t been released.

Troopers say a 21-year-old man from Newburgh in neighboring Orange County had retrieved a legally owned handgun and recklessly discharged one round, inadvertently shooting the woman in the face.

He was charged with assault and reckless endangerment. He has been released from jail after posting bail.
