SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A 23-year-old Utah man has been charged with killing his father and attacking his grandparents with a shotgun and a knife inside a home.

Michael Vandemerwe, of West Valley City, was charged Thursday with aggravated murder and attempted aggravated murder.

Vandemerwe’s grandmother had called 911 to report that her grandson was stabbing her husband Jan. 24.

Court documents say the suspect’s father intervened and began struggling with his son before he was shot.

Gregory Vandemerwe died at the scene and the grandparents were taken to a hospital.

Paul Manning had stab wounds that were not life-threatening. Elaine Manning suffered a gunshot wound and had not regained consciousness as of Thursday.

Police say Michael Vandemerwe was arrested without incident and told officers he shot his father and grandmother after they tried to protect his grandfather.

It’s unclear what prompted the attack.
