SPARKS, Nev. (AP) - The Sparks Fire Department is investigating an apartment fire that was extinguished by an off-duty firefighter.

KOLO-TV reports (https://bit.ly/2k9uBKp ) that the off-duty Sparks fire captain says he was on his way home Saturday when he spotted heavy flames on the balcony of the second story of the apartment building.

The fire captain climbed the outside of the building and pulled a dog from the balcony, lowering it to neighbors who then tossed him a fire extinguisher. The fire captain was able to put out the majority of the fire before on-duty crews arrived.

The dog bit him during the rescue. He was treated at the scene and released.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
