PHILADELPHIA (AP) - City officials continue to struggle to place children in Philadelphia’s new pre-K program despite increasing demand.
Philadelphia’s Office of Education tells the Philadelphia Inquirer (https://bit.ly/2kmxmdI ) that the program planned to enroll 2,000 children in the program, which launched in January. So far, the program counts 1,562 enrollees.
Officials cite the time of year and the struggle to find convenient program locations for parents as early hurdles for the plan. They say they are adjusting to meet the demand.
Philadelphia’s sweetened beverage tax will fund the $12.2 million bill for the program this year. The city also gained a huge push in the form of a $1.8 million grant from the William Penn Foundation that was announced Monday. Costs are expected to reach $60 million annually by 2021.
