JACKSON, Tenn. (AP) - A plea deal has been reached in a 2012 shooting case involving a former Henderson County sheriff.
The Jackson Sun reports (https://bit.ly/2knMOqg) Ricky Lunsford pleaded guilty Monday to charges of attempted involuntary manslaughter and unlawful possession of a weapon.
Lunsford was convicted on charges he shot at and attempted to kill his wife Mary Lunsford in 2012. But the Tennessee Court of Appeals overturned that conviction on the grounds that the trial court failed to properly instruct the jury that Mary Lunsford had previously faced a domestic assault charge.
A new trial was ordered.
Lunsford’s attorney Mark Donahoe said the plea agreement was made because it removed an original weapon charge that if convicted, Lunsford would have been required to serve at least six years.
Lunsford’s sentencing is in March.
