AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - A Maine lawmakers says Monhegan Island would be jeopardized by wind energy testing and should be protected from it.

Sen. Dana Dow, a Lincoln Republican, says he has submitted a bill that would prohibit placement of a wind energy test area within 10 miles of the Monhegan Island Lobster Conservation Area.

He says the move would safeguard Monhegan’s legacy as a place of unspoiled beauty. He also says it would protect the population of migratory birds that use the island as a landfall.

Dow says Monhegan should be afforded the same kind of protections Mainers would want for Mount Katahdin and Acadia National Park.

Monhegan is known as an artist colony and it is also home to seasonal residents and summer visitors. It’s also the base of a lobster fishery.
