SAN GABRIEL, Calif. (AP) - Authorities have arrested a man they say tried to burn down a San Gabriel home and attacked the resident with a meat cleaver.

A 911 call for help sent officers to the home shortly before 12:30 a.m. Wednesday. Police say they found two men fighting.

The 40-year-old victim was taken to a hospital with head and back wounds.

The other man fled but was arrested after a short chase.

Police allege that 40-year-old Luis Anchondo forced his way into the home through a window and poured gasoline on the floor before he was confronted and a fight began.

He then allegedly hit the other man several times with a cleaver.

Anchondo remains jailed on suspicion of burglary, attempted murder, and attempted arson. It’s unclear if he has a lawyer.
