ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - A report from Asheville police says the city’s top spot for serious crime is in the downtown area, where thousands of tourists flock to drink and eat.
The Asheville Citizen-Times reports (https://avlne.ws/2kTY7XT) downtown saw more acts of violence and other serious crimes in 2016 than in the city’s four other crime hot spots combined. Police categorize serious crimes as those ranging from larceny to murder.
The statistics come from Police Chief Tammy Hooper, who earlier this year presented elected city officials with preliminary statistics from her department. The numbers showed 57 violent and 294 property crimes.
Hooper wants an additional $1 million a year to provide 24-hour police coverage of downtown. Council members denied that request last year, but didn’t rule out allocating property tax or other money this year.
