HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) - Washington County school officials have chosen a new superintendent to take over when the current superintendent heads to Charlotte, North Carolina next month.

The Washington County Board of Education on Tuesday approved Boyd Michael as its choice for interim superintendent and then unanimously voted to affirm its intention to appoint him to the post permanently. Boyd’s official appointment is pending state approval.

The 59-year-old Boonsboro resident has served as deputy superintendent since 2008. He will take over when Clayton Wilcox leaves next month to become the superintendent of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.

Michael says one of his top priorities is to resolve the budget. He also says he is excited by the board’s involvement in the Urban Improvement Project in downtown Hagerstown.
