BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - The attorney general says the number one consumer complaint in North Dakota last year was impostor scams.
Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem says more than 100 North Dakota residents were victims of these scams, with some individuals losing thousands of dollars. They include fake IRS calls, bogus sweepstakes, phony grandchild in distress calls and romance scams.
The attorney general advises not to trust your caller ID phone feature because technology is readily available to create a fake sender name and number. And Stenehjem says a sure sign of a scam is a request to send or wire money.
Other top consumer complaints of 2016 include identity theft, do not call violations, contractor or home improvement troubles, mail order problems and disputes with auto advertising or warranties.
