BOSCAWEN, N.H. (AP) - Officials say an inmate found dead at the Merrimack County Jail in New Hampshire killed himself by using a piece of metal from an arm brace he wore to slit his throat.
The body of 53-year-old Roger Ward, of Henniker, was found Dec. 20 during a routine welfare check at the Boscawen jail.
Ward was being held on charges alleging he sexually assaulted two girls. He pleaded not guilty in September.
The Concord Monitor reports (https://bit.ly/2ijiJXW) Ward was living in a unit where inmates are checked every 30 minutes. He was not on suicide watch. In September, he was wearing a cast. It was replaced by a soft brace, which comes with a piece of metal stitched to the fabric. A larger piece of metal had been removed for safety reasons.
