ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) - The mayor of Rock Hill wants the city to create its own bus system.

The Herald of Rock Hill (https://bit.ly/2j3e1Oq) reported that Mayor Doug Echols said a bus system would connect nearly all the residents to the city’s top growth spots.

Rock Hill had a population of just over 66,000 people in the 2010 census. Its only public bus service comes from the Charlotte Area Transit System, which runs a bus to and from Charlotte.

City officials think they could offer the system without charging fares. They say most of the cost could be paid for with federal grants. They hope the sale of advertising and other local funds would cover the rest of the costs.

City council is expected to consider the idea in the next month.
