PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (AP) - A Rhode Island man who says he was beaten and injured by a Portsmouth police officer has filed a federal lawsuit against the town and several officers.

The Newport Daily News reports that Dennis Szafir alleges in the suit filed last month that while responding to a noise complaint in December 2013, Officer Matthew Daguanno entered Szafir’s apartment without permission.

The suit says Daguanno instructed Szafir to spread his legs before taking them out from under him, driving Szafir to the floor. The suit says Szafir suffered a concussion, bruising and damage to his back.

The suit seeks damages exceeding the statutory threshold of $10,000. An attorney for the town says the defendants aren’t responsible for Szafir’s injuries.
