FITCHBURG, Mass. (AP) - A New Jersey man charged with fatally beating a man inside the victim’s Massachusetts apartment then setting a fire to cover this tracks has been held without bail.

A judge entered not guilty pleas to murder and other charges on behalf of Jose Crespo at his arraignment Thursday in Fitchburg District Court.

Prosecutors say the 32-year-old Newark, New Jersey, resident was one of two masked and armed men who demanded entrance to Kevin Cabrera’s Fitchburg apartment on Dec. 3. Authorities say once inside, they bound and beat the 24-year-old Cabrera, stole $2,700 in cash, and then set the fire. Cabrera’s girlfriend and 7-year-old son were in the apartment at the time but escaped unharmed.

The second suspect faces arraignment next week.

Crespo’s attorney did not argue for bail.
