CARTHAGE, Miss. (AP) - A man has been arrested on animal cruelty charges as an investigation continues into whether horses were being starved.

Leake County Sheriff Greg Waggoner tells WLBT-TV (https://bit.ly/2jGwAoV) that Joe Nathan Stewart was arrested and charged with one count of animal cruelty. Waggoner says the rest of the horses apparently belong to someone else.

Neighbor Paula John says of six horses, only one is still walking around. Waggoner says some horses died, but he’s not sure whether it’s because of starvation or disease.

Animal rescuers are trying to nurse that horse back to health. They also hope to aid a second horse that was alive but could not initially stand. A local veterinarian is treating the second horse after rescuers coaxed her to stand Thursday, but she could still be euthanized.
