MEDFORD, N.Y. (AP) - Police say an officer is in the hospital after a pickup truck rear-ended a police car making a traffic stop on the Long Island Expressway.

Newsday reports (https://nwsdy.li/2iZoMi1 ) the officer stopped a car that had been speeding in Medford on Sunday morning when it was hit by the truck. The police car had been on the right shoulder of the expressway.

Suffolk County police say the impact sent the police car crashing into the car it had pulled over.

The officer is being held overnight for observation at a hospital in Bay Shore.

The 49-year-old pickup truck driver has been taken to a different hospital with a minor facial injury.

Police say the 18-year-old driver of the car that was pulled over wasn’t hurt.
