BOSTON (AP) - The crew of the USS Constitution will open the ship to the public in commemoration of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday.

Public tours will be given on Monday - the Martin Luther King holiday - from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The USS Constitution -nicknamed “Old Ironsides”- defended sea lanes against global threats from 1797 to 1855. The ship is now a featured destination on Boston’s Freedom Trail. The ship’s crew of active duty U.S. Navy sailors offers community outreach and education about the ship’s history to more than 500,000 visitors each year.

The ship is currently dry docked in Boston’s Charlestown Navy Yard for a multiyear planned restoration period.
