ASHEBORO, N.C. (AP) - Nearly 800,000 people visited the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro last year.

Zoo officials said in a news release that the 2016 attendance was the third largest ever.

The more than 797,000 people who visited last year are behind only the 1994 and 1995 attendance. In 1995 the zoo attracted more than 840,000 visitors. The zoo opened its North America continental exhibit that year.

The zoo opened to the public in 1974. Its first “continent,” Africa, opened in 1979.
