PEARISBURG, Va. (AP) - Virginia State Police say a man has died after being shot by deputies because he threatened them with a knife outside a burning house.

State police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said in an email Wednesday that 26-year-old Rodney Hoback Jr. of Pearisburg died Tuesday at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Geller said deputies and firefighters responding to the fire on Jan. 12 encountered Hoback being combative outside. She said both deputies fired after Hoback ignored commands to drop the knife and began advancing on them. Firefighters later put out the blaze.

Hoback’s body was taken to the Office of the Medical Examiner in Roanoke.

Giles County Sheriff Morgan Millirons says both deputies remain on administrative leave. Geller says the deputies and Hoback are white.
